Florida LAKEWATCH is a citizen volunteer lake monitoring program coordinated through the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences/FFGS Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. The Defenders of Crooked Lake have been supporting and participating in the LAKEWATCH program on Crooked Lake for nearly 30 years. Most recently, past President Bob Luther has been collecting and submitting the monthly samples.
In March 2021, LAKEWATCH Coordinator Marina Schwartz traveled from Gainesville to provide training for a new group of LAKEWATCH Volunteers. Lisa and Joe Jensen hosted the training event on their dock.
Each month, volunteers collect samples for Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Chlorophyll, and make an observation of clarity at 7 locations around Crooked Lake. The volunteers then process the samples and drop them for shipment to Gainesville for analysis. Thanks so much to our voluneers for their hard work!
